Running with swords (Sherraine MacKay) Ref: BM4
Running With Swords, Sherraine Mackay, 2005.
With six World Cup victories and a best world ranking of No. 2, Sherraine MacKay has an impressive international record. In this insightful autobiography, she describes with humour and irony her journey from the Canadian backwoods to the top echelon of women's epee. To improve her ranking, she moved to France where she experienced loneliness, eating disorders and depression, but at the 1999 world championships, she came 6th, missing a medal by one hit.
Following a disappointing Sydney Olympics, she decided to train seriously for the next Games. First the small matter of marriage intervened. With her husband Geordie MacKay she moved to Paris so that she could fence at the Racing Club and benefit from advanced coaching. To make ends meet, they lived like students, she working as an English-language teacher and he as a babysitter.
Despite peaking at just the right time to win the last pre-Olympic World Cup event, she encountered another nightmare in Athens, losing in the first round and was left contemplating her goals. But she determined to buckle down for another Olympiad, moving on to Budapest where the living was cheaper. She is still in the world top 10, so the stage is set for a second instalment of Sherraine MacKay's inspirational memoirs.

Epee 2.0: the Birth of the New Fencing Paradigm, Johan Harmenberg, 2007
Classical fencers will hate this book. Johan Harmenberg had no great technical ability, but used a revolutionary approach to training and a brilliant analytical mind to beat the best classical epeeists of the late 1970s, becoming both world and Olympic champion. It is the first book to describe in detail just how a top competitive fencer thinks when on the piste against equally determined opponents.
Forestalling the normal dialogue of classical fencing, Harmenberg forced his opponents to attack him where he was strongest and limited his actions to a few perfectly rehearsed moves. Developed with an innovative coach, this approach effectively neutralised the most talented fencers in the world and forever changed the way epee was fenced. The fascinating story of how it all happened in the face of opposition from the fencing establishment makes compelling reading.

handbook for beginners, with tips for strengthening your sword arm, some of the recommended moves would be more appropriate to an 18th or 19th century manual: No. 95 - The Appel - slapping your foot on the floor to confuse your opponent. No. 104 - The Passate Soto - a ducking movement in which the free hand drops to the floor. No. 105 - The Knee Drop - as above with the knee also resting on the floor.
But these bizarre diversions apart, this is a practical guide with numerous illustrations of exercises and positions that will help to explain the basics of fencing to parents and young fencers. Paperback.
Price: $30.89 Including FREE shipping. Fencing Essential Skill Traing (Ed Rogers) Ref: BR2
Paperback edition of a manual by Ed Rogers, a coach at Heriot-Watt University, first published in 2003. It is designed to assist fencers, who may not have access to regular coaching, to work together to develop their own skills at foil, epee and sabre. Explanations of basic skills illustrated by line drawings are followed by exercises identifying actions by fencer 'A' and corresponding actions by partner 'B'.
All the training is stroke-based, usually conducted from engaged blades with both fencers stationary, which will assist fencers who are not coaches to give the correct blade conditions for their partner's practice. But there is little information to develop correct execution of footwork and mobility, a limitation for those studying for coaching awards

The two men who led Germany to its most successful senior world championships in 1993 (3 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze medals), team manager Berndt Barth and chief coach Emil Beck, have joined forces to produce a comprehensive textbook on German fencing methods. They have edited contributions from experts in all aspects of fencing and there are detailed sections on all three weapons. A special chapter is devoted to Emil Beck's formidable system of lessons, each of which typically includes 12-17 activities performed with seven different forms of footwork in a session lasting 20-40 minutes.
The translators have understandably struggled to turn the densely technical German original into clear and concise English, with the result that the book does not provide easy reading. But coaches will find perseverance rewarding and all fencers should benefit from this guide to international success.

A stimulating and controversial autobiography by arguably the greatest fencer of all time. Before the war, Aldo Nadi led the sort of life as a professional fencer that is inconceivable today, earning a good living by giving three or four exhibition matches a year watched by thousands of paying spectators. For 12 years he challenged and defeated every world and Olympic champion at foil, epee and sabre. In 1923 the great French fencer, Lucien Gaudin, who went on to win both foil and epee titles at the 1928 Olympics, said "No one will defeat Aldo Nadi in the next 20 years." But for the war, he would probably have been right.
In his autobiography Nadi eloquently describes his fencing and amorous encounters as he gambled his way across Europe with a succession of beautiful women. The war destroyed this playboy lifestyle and he spent the last 30 years of his life teaching fencing in America. Although unpublished at his death in 1965, the book was rescued by William Gaugler so that modern fencers can read about Nadi's extraordinary exploits and a way of life that has vanished for ever.
